If you don’t know how to use a tap and die set properly then don’t worry. You’re on a right place for sure.
A tap and die set is important for homes, offices, workshops, makeshift and temporary structures where changes and different improvements need to be done.
These improvements which involve creating/repairing internal and external threads are necessary due to the wears in metals, office, home and workshop equipment.
For worn out threads, it is necessary to create new ones that can help fit the structures together like furniture and other metal equipment. This is where the tap and die set comes in hand.
What’s Their Importance?
A tap is used to create/repair the internal female threads that are found inside a hole, on a metal and various appliances. They are mostly cylindrical with various thread sizes and shapes on the external bit.
They vary based on diameter and the type of internal/female thread to be created.
A die, on the other hand, is used to create the external or male thread that is found on bolts and screws. The dies have cutting edges in their center which is used to create the threads on a plain metal to be converted to a bolt or screw.
The two equipment’s can be hand used or come in other sophisticated forms like machines and this means that lesser time is used for creating them and more efficiency.
How to Use : Step by Step Guide
Step 1: Deciding what Size
Before you use a tap to create a threaded hole, the first thing is to determine what size you need to create. In creating an internal thread using a tap, the hole should be smaller than the tap.
This is to ensure that a well fit thread hole for the intended screw fits properly.
Sizes can be measured using a thread gauge, using a ruler or counting the threads. Creating a female internal thread is determined based on the sizes on the tap which are always written on them.
Step 2: Prepare for Use
The tap and die need to have a handle for holding the tap (which is for internal thread) and the other for die (which is for the external thread). You need to unscrew the handle so that it fits the tap and then screw it back.
The handle will need to be placed where it can become steady without moving for use. Apply a lubricant or a coating of oil to the tap thread.
Step 3: Create the Internal Thread
You will then fix the tap into the hole which is a bit smaller than the tap. You apply some force to fit in, after which you start turning the tap in a clockwise direction. While you are doing this, the thread is being created gradually and this also means that some metals are being cut out.
The ones being cut out are still in the hole so they can make it difficult to bore through at once.
You will need to unscrew or bit, blow off the metals and continue the process in the same clockwise direction. This will go through the hole with internal female thread created. The chamfer and end of the tap needs to be left stuck out, so you can remove the tap from the hole.
Step 4: Clean off Metals and Oil
After unscrewing or removing the tap from the newly thread hole, you need to remove the scrap and cut out metals from the hole and tap. The oil used for lubrication needs to be cleaned as well.
Step 5: Screw
You can get the specified screw meant for the newly created thread hole to fit. It might be difficult if the threads are uneven, however, there is need to practice the process again till it’s perfect.
Step 6: Using a Die/ Create a Screw
Now that you have used the tap to create a threaded female hole, you need to create a screw using the die. It is the screw that will fit in, in step 5 above.
After determining the die size for the screw to be created, you fix the die in a die stock to place it in a position that is steady. Apply a lubricant as well. Fix it on the screw or metal that needs repair or an external thread. The die will screw based on the direction of the old thread on
Step 7: Turn and Create Screw
You can go on and create the screw by turning the die. After this process, you will need to unscrew, wipe out cut metals and clean off the oil and there you have your screw.
With the threaded female hole (created by the tap), the screw or externally threaded metal (created by the die) can fit into it (the hole) and used to hold any of your equipment or fittings and furniture.
And finally you are now know how to use a tap and die set properly. This is not rocket science. Just you need to give full attention while using tap and die set. That’s it.
